The Black Panther Party was founded by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale, two charismatic leaders who sought to address the pressing issues affecting their community. Newton, a young and ambitious activist, had recently returned from serving in the U.S. Air Force and was disillusioned with the slow pace of change in the Civil Rights movement. Seale, a friend and fellow activist, shared Newton's vision of creating a militant organization that would protect and serve African American communities.
This demand created friction. The old guard—the founding Panteras who survived police crackdowns and inter-faction wars—resisted. In response, a parallel structure was born.
