The ROM is patched with new code to accommodate the additional characters, stages, and gameplay mechanics. The game features a total of 11 playable characters, 32 levels, and a variety of power-ups and items.

Super Mario Bros. Crossover is a ROM hack of the original Super Mario Bros. game, designed for the NES. It was created by a dedicated fan and released online, allowing players to experience a fresh take on the classic Mario formula. This hack replaces the original characters, power-ups, enemies, and even some of the levels with new content inspired by other iconic NES games.

One well-known example is "Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels" or projects like "Super Mario Bros. Crossover," which is a fan-made ROM hack that allows you to play as characters from other NES games, such as Mega Man, The Legend of Zelda, or Kid Icarus, through levels inspired by or directly taken from the original Super Mario Bros. games.

This isn't just a simple sprite swap. The level design remains the same (mostly), but the way you navigate it changes completely. Samus can bomb her way through floors that Mario could never pass. Mega Man can slide under obstacles. Link can attack upwards.
